Melasma Skin Condition

Denver and Highlands Ranch, Colorado

Melasma is a darkening of the skin and is a common skin disorder seen in both men and women, and pregnant women are especially prone to this problem. It usually appears as dark skin rash on the face and can present itself on the lips, cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper arms as well. The skin discoloration can vary between a deep grey to a dark brown.

What cause Melasma remains unknown but may be related to a growth in cell production which dispenses the pigment, melanin, which controls dark skin color. Found in all cultures and ethnicities Melasma seems to be more common in Hispanics, Asians, North Africans, and Arabs; all who tend to have large amounts of melanin in their skin.

There are some other triggers, however, and some of them are heredity aspects, hormone production (which is why pregnant women are effected), over exposure to the sun, birth control pills, and certain medications derived from quinine. There is no known cure but there are ways to decrease or remove the signs of Melasma.

Rosacea

Rosacea is another common skin condition that affects over 10 million Americans on average.

Again, this condition afflicts both men and women especially those between the age of 30-50 of fair skin and who blush freely. Rosacea can cause redness, swelling, and bumps particularly in the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin areas. Sometimes it can appear similar to acne but instead of getting blackheads, they develop telangiectasias, or dilated blood vessels.

Unfortunately, Rosacea is a chronic condition and its causes are unknown. Some triggers are sunlight, hot or cold temperatures, wind, spicy foods, alcohol, and certain skin products.

Rosacea cannot resolve itself without some form of treatment. Facial Aesthetics can help provide relief through many of our procedures designed to alleviate this distressing and sometimes embarrassing condition.

Our trained clinicians can help you to determine if laser therapy such as Intense Pulse Light (IPL), a proven technology which is useful for Rosacea. Microdermabrasion and our Facials are aggressive, effective, and noninvasive. We recommend our many fine home care products including the innovative, Rose Cleanser.
