BroadBand light therapy results in DenverBroadBand Light (BBL) is a type of intense pulsed light therapy. The pulses of light heat the layers beneath the surface of your skin, prompting a healing response that softens blemishes and pigmentation problems. If you are interested in this skin treatment, the experienced team of Medical Clinicians at Facial Aesthetics can determine if you are a good candidate.

What is BBL?

BBL is a state-of-the-art skin treatment. It's a great option to improve skin that is showing signs of sun damage, environmental damage, age and a generally active lifestyle. Problems commonly treated with BBL include:

  • Fine lines
  • Age spots
  • Sun spots
  • Redness
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Pigmented lesions
  • Vascular lesions

The pulsed light can be used on many areas of the body, as long as the device can lie flat against the skin. The most frequently treated areas are the:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Shoulders
  • Back of hands

Skin is smoother and brighter after the treatment. Pores will also look smaller and smoother, and blemishes and discoloration will fade.

How the Treatment Works

Denver woman after BBL face treatmentPulsed light is delivered to the skin with a handheld device. As the light is emitted, some patients describe the sensation of heat or a slight pinch. Any discomfort is tolerated quite well by the vast majority of patients. The length of the appointment depends on the treatment areas, but it could take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to complete the light therapy.

So how does it all work exactly? The heat emitted by the pulses of light prompt your skin cells to generate new collagen. Collagen is a protein that provides scaffold-like structure to your skin. Youthful skin looks smooth and plump in part because of collagen abundance. Our bodies produce less collagen as we age and the collagen that is produced is less firm than before. This natural loss of high-quality collagen is compounded by the damaging effects of the sun; namely ultraviolet rays inhibiting the production of new collagen.

BBL heats the upper layers of your skin, boosting production of collagen in the months following your treatment. This is what provides the skin-smoothing and blemish-reducing effects.

How many treatments will I need? To get the best possible results, more than one treatment may be needed. Once our experienced Medical Clinician examines your skin and discusses your goals with you, they can determine how many treatments are needed. These appointments are typically spaced several weeks apart.

After a BBL treatment, your skin may be red for a few hours. Most people are able to go back to work and resume other normal activities immediately. Our team will make sure that you have complete aftercare instructions to protect your results, which includes avoiding direct sun exposure.
