For those who are seeking permanent removal of unwanted hair, laser treatment has become quite a popular option. This convenient, non-invasive method permanent reduces or removes unwanted hair through penetrating beams of highly concentrated light into hair follicles to destroy them.
Just recently the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) released a new survey stating that approximately 633,000 laser hair removal procedures were performed by ASDS members last year, which is a 27 percent increase from 2013.
If considering laser hair removal, here are 5 things to keep in mind:
1.Those with dark hair and light skin see the best results
Since the laser targets the pigments in the hairs, blonde, red, and gray hair won't see ideal results because they lack the pigment that is needed for the laser to effectively detect it. For those with darker skin tone, there may not be enough contrast between skin and hair pigmentation.
2.Don't wax or tweeze pre-treatment
Hair follicles need to be in the proper growth stage for treatment so hair removal of this sort should be avoided for a few weeks prior to the procedure.
3.Shave on the day of treatment
This allows for the laser to more precisely target the hair follicles.
4.Multiple treatments are needed
For best results, you will need to stay consistent with appointments every 4-6 weeks. On average it takes about 6 to 8 eight sessions, sometimes more depending on the individual.
5.Not everyone will be completely hair-free
In some instances, the laser will not be able to get rid of fine hairs but this is not always the case.
