Sunspots – also called solar lentigines, age spots, and liver spots – are discolored marks on the surface of the skin that typically appear on areas frequently exposed to sunlight. Sunspots and other visual evidence of sun damage usually appear in adults over the age of 40, but they can affect anyone. By definition, sun spots are benign – meaning they are not cancerous and do not require medical treatment – but for someone who is self-conscious about their skin’s appearance, they can be frustrating.

Sunspots are usually dark, flat spots with an oval shape, and can appear in several different areas of the body, including:

  • Face
  • Hands
  • Shoulders
  • Back
  • Feet

Increased pigmentation makes sunspots darker than your normal skin shade. They can be as small as a freckle, or can span over a centimeter. They may also cluster with other sunspots, making them more visible.
