The Short Answer

Pregnant mom reading to her son and seated on the couchNo, it's not risky or dangerous to receive a photofacial – such as BroadBand Light Therapy – while you are breastfeeding. The only caveat has to do with the topical anesthetic that is usually applied to the face at the beginning of treatment. While there is no evidence that this topical anesthetic will get into your breast milk after being applied to your face, many women wish to avoid even a remote possibility. It's perfectly acceptable to complete the facial without the anesthetic.

The Longer Answer

The best way to answer this question is to visit our team for a one-on-one consultation. That way, we can talk to you about your options and ideal timelines.

On the benefits of delaying your photofacial: Sometimes, the best choice is simply to delay all unnecessary treatments until after breastfeeding. In the 6 months – 1 year after childbirth, your body and hormones adjust and eventually stabilize. Before stabilization is reached, everything in your body could be affected, including your breast shape, tummy and your skin. Wait until the skin on your face has balanced out hormonally so that we can determine the best treatment for the long term.

Chemical vs. light-based facials: A chemical facial would certainly be more of a concern. The chemicals get absorbed by your body and could eventually be present in breast milk. This is something you should avoid. A photofacial uses light to rejuvenate the skin, and the light doesn't get absorbed into your body. Nonetheless, some moms choose to wait till breastfeeding is no longer in the equation.

Tailored answers: Contact our practice to arrange a consultation. Our experienced team needs to see your face and skin before recommending anything, photofacial or otherwise. Ultimately, there could be an option like skin care products allowing you to treat some of the present issues while delaying photofacials till the time you are no longer breastfeeding.

What is a Photofacial, Anyway?

At Facial Aesthetics, we offer BBL (BroadBand Light) Therapy as a safe, effective and noninvasive photofacial option. Our team uses a handheld device, passing it gently across the surface of the skin. The device emits pulses of light that heat the layers of tissue beneath the surface of your skin. It is the heat that prompts your skin to heal and re-model, with benefits including:

  • Softens fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduces skin discoloration
  • Reduces visible sun damage
  • Evens out the complexion

While the skin-heating function of BBL shouldn't pose any risks for breastfeeding, we can help you decide if you want to opt for this treatment now or later.
