Top Dermal Filler Questions

What is a dermal filler? Injectable gel-like formulations that smooth fine lines and restore diminished fat volume below the skin. While injectables like BOTOX® treat the muscular contractions that cause wrinkles, fillers augment the subcutaneous tissue below your skin. Top dermal fillers available today include:

What is the purpose of adding volume below the skin? Fat below the skin diminishes with age. The loss of subcutaneous volume – combined with the effect of sagging skin, UV damage and other factors – leads to wrinkles and less youthful skin. Dermal fillers restore volume in the subcutaneous tissue.

Am I a candidate? Good candidates for dermal fillers generally want to soften one or more of the following:

  • Crow's feet
  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines
  • Hollow cheeks
  • Hollows and dark circles below the eyes

In addition, dermal fillers augment thin lips or lips that have begun to turn downward with age.

How long will results last? It depends on the exact filler. Some last several months, some half of a year, others a year or longer. Each filler is really reliable in terms of how long it will last, so you will know this information when you pick the dermal filler.

What is the procedure like? The injectable appointments are completely non-surgical. Once the treatment has begun, it will take only a matter of minutes to complete the injections. A numbing gel or an anesthetic block is provided to reduce any mild discomfort caused by the injections. You'll be ready to get back to your day immediately! Slight swelling and redness at the injection site is normal. It's important not to lie down or rub the area for several hours so that the filler can settle correctly.

How popular are fillers? They continue to get more and more popular each year! According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, soft-tissue fillers were:

  • Up 3 percent in 2017 compared to 2016
  • Up 2 percent in 2016 compared to 2015
  • Up 6 percent in 2015 compared to 2014

Their pervasiveness has steadily increased since the year 2000.
