Skin care treatments to reduce the appearance of acne scars include:
- Dermal fillers: By filling in the depressions made by some types of acne scars, dermal fillers can reduce the appearance of these scars. Dermal fillers are non-surgical, and involve injecting a filler material, such as hyaluronic acid, beneath the skin.
- Microdermabrasion: Using abrasion to slough away the surface layer of skin cells, microdermabrasion can reduce the appearance of acne scars. Raised scars can be ablated to reveal smoother skin, and deep scars may be made less noticeable by laser resurfacing.
- Laser treatments: Laser skin resurfacing, such as DOT therapy or Cutera Laser Genesis, vaporizes the tissue of the scar. These laser treatments also stimulate the production of new skin cells.
All of the above skin care treatments are non-surgical. Although microdermabrasion and laser skin resurfacing may produce some redness, irritation and other aesthetic side effects, downtime for these treatments is minimal. Most likely you will need more than one treatment session to achieve the best results.
The proper skin care treatment is determined partly by the type of acne scar; for example, whether they are raised, shallow or deep scars.
