What is KYBELLA?
KYBELLA is an injectable synthetic acid that mimics a type of acid naturally occurring in your body. It's called deoxycholic acid, and it breaks down and destroys excess fat cells in the area under your chin. You may have heard this fat referred to as "submental fullness" or a double chin.
How KYBELLA Works
But what does all that mean for a double chin? When KYBELLA 's synthetic form of deoxycholic acid is injected into fat beneath the skin, it destroys the cell membrane just like the natural version does in the digestive tract. Gradually the destroyed fat cells are processed out of your body as waste.
Here is What You Can Expect at Your Appointment
The KYBELLA appointment is simple, quick and painless! Of course you may feel mild pinching as the needles are inserted, and some people report a slight warming sensation in the moments the drug begins working. Numbing cream is applied to the area before the injections are administered.
KYBELLA isn't a single injection. A series of injections are made in strategic locations under the chin. Our Aesthetic Nurse Injectors will determine how many injections need to be made in your case. Dozens are typically needed – usually between 20 and 30 injections. This will be completed in a matter of minutes.
Just about every KYBELLA patient requires between two to six of these injection sessions, spaced six weeks apart. One treatment session is rarely sufficient to get the results desired.
Your chin area may feel sore for a couple hours after your appointment, but any discomfort will dissipate quickly. Swelling is also to be expected. Swelling is most pronounced about 24 hours later, and then it will begin to subside over the next several days.
KYBELLA doesn't work instantaneously. It's a process. Your body eliminates the destroyed fat cells over time. But after your last injection session is complete, your final results will take shape in the coming weeks.
Lasting results: The great thing about KYBELLA is that the fat cells that are destroyed and eliminated, are destroyed and eliminated for good. Your body does not grow new fat cells, but it is possible for the remaining fat cells under your chin to enlarge with weight gain. Having said that, studies show the majority of patients are still happy with their results years later.

Preparing for Kybella Treatment
Because we recognize that every patient is different, we understand that pre/post-care guidelines will be unique to your situation. Follow the specific instructions given to you by our staff to ensure the best results and so you can meet your cosmetic goals. The following guidelines are meant to provide you with a general idea of what to expect when preparing for your treatment.
Schedule your appointment with plenty of time before a major event. The swelling after this procedure may take awhile to subside.
Inform our team if you have any history with difficulty swallowing, known allergies, take allergy medications or have ever had an anaphylactic reaction.
Women who are pregnant or nursing should not get this treatment.
Avoid taking ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc. in the weeks prior to your procedure. Taking these beforehand can cause significant bruising after the procedure.
Wash your face and neck area the day of your procedure. This will help to minimize your risk of infection.
Your in-office KYBELLA injections should be relatively quick. The time it takes can vary depending on the personalized plan our experienced team constructed for you. After you're finished, you should continually care for the treated area while at home. Our staff may instruct you to follow guidelines including:
- Do not panic if you see redness, swelling or bruising a couple of weeks after your treatment. This is normal and to be expected. However, if symptoms persist, call our office.
- Ice the area carefully. Make sure to keep a cloth barrier between your skin and the ice pack to avoid potential frostbite.
- You can apply a cool compress to the area, and may be instructed to do this for the next few days.
- Avoid strenuous activity for the first few days after your injections.
- Sleep with your head elevated to avoid additional swelling.
- Do NOT massage the area. This will cause further irritation.
- Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen as instructed.
